Uplighting vs. Lighting Design: What's the Difference?

2 min read

Uplighting is one tool. Lighting design is the plan for the whole room. Most people ask for the first when what they are picturing is the second.

What uplighting does

Uplights are wireless LED fixtures that sit on the floor and throw color up a wall, a column or a drape. They change how a room feels faster than anything else. A plain ballroom in house lighting and the same ballroom in amber are two different rooms.

Uplights have limits. They light the walls, not the tables, the stage or the dance floor. More fixtures give you tighter, more even spacing along the wall, but they will not make the cake stand out or put your logo on the floor.

What lighting design adds

A lighting design starts with the room and the run of the event, then decides what each area needs.

  • Pin spotting puts focused light on centerpieces, the cake or a head table so the details show in photos.

  • Monogram or logo projection puts names, initials or a brand mark on the floor, wall or ceiling.

  • Moving heads follow the program. They are run live by a technician, so entrances, awards and the dance floor each get their own look.

  • Atmospheric effects such as Dancing on the Clouds give a first dance or a reveal its moment.

The point is that these pieces are planned together. The colors match, the timing follows your schedule, and nothing fights the photographer.

How to tell which one you need

Uplighting alone works when the room is already strong and you want warmth or color. Think of a venue with good architecture, a daytime event, or a dinner with no program.

You need a design when something has to happen in the room. That includes a grand entrance, a first dance, a keynote, an awards segment or a brand that must be visible. It also applies when the decor is a real investment and you want it seen.

Where to start

Send us your date, venue and the look you want. We reply with a custom lighting plan within 1 business day, and it may well be uplighting only if that is what the room calls for.
